DESIGNING A TEACHER PROGRAM ON EARTH’S CLIMATES

The teaching program is aimed at students of first year in secondary education in the subject: Social Science. The unit has been designed  following the idea of the general structure, speaking tips, identification of language skills, scaffolding and final self-assessment.

Objectives:
This unit, entitled "The Eaths's climates" in intended to  identify the structure and composition of the atmosphere, differentiate weather from climate and distinguish the elements of climate and the factors which determine them. Besides, students are going to learn how describe the main characteristics of the Earth´s different climates and explain the interaction between climate, relief, water, soil and living things.

First Lesson

Students first meet with specific vocabulary, so a vocabulary guide is provided to encourage them to try some dialogs, using key words collected in the vocabulary section and exercise 1, which also helps them to identify the main variables in circular motion studies. Some exercises on line will help us to introduce the lesson and practice with new vocabulary.

Geography terms

Futhermore, we follow the explanation with the interactive presentation made in Prezi.

Weather and climate

Second Lesson

Students have to identify the different climates and their landscapes and practice in groups with their characteristics .
A word search puzze is proposed to finish the initial tasks in order to go over the specific words once again and get acquainted with them.

Word seach

After, a video about the Eath's climates will help students with fixing the ideas.

Third lesson

The aim of this session is that the students learn how to create a weather forecast and put in practice what they have learnt. First of all, they will read a text used as a model. Next, they will write their own forecast. Finally, they will prepare a presentation as if they were they weather forecaster on TV.

Fourth Lesson

Students are going to practice now with listening skill in order to improve their important part of the L2

The weather forecast

The lesson ends with a debate task to discuss the relationship between weather and climate and their differences and how the climate can affect our lifes.. Some speaking advice is displayed in order to help the students to compare facts and to show different degrees of agreement. Students must gather some conclusions and write them down

Fifth Lesson

In this unit we ae going to practice with an his activity of transformation Scaffolding

In pairs or groups, students are going to prepare an oral weather forecast by first choosing the place and time for their predictions.

  •  Making their own maps and designing the weather symbols "clouds", "sun", "thunder and lightning", etc.
  • Playing the role of the weatherman/woman on TV.
  • Acting it out in front of the class and record it by using the school's digital voice recorder and/or the video camera.
Sixth Lesson

Then, we are going to consolidate the concepts and the practice with English grammar too.

Seventh lesson

I have proposed a creative task in which the students must figure out, write down and solve three different problems.

The lesson carries on with a bilingual glossary: an empty table to be filled up with key words in English and Spanish; and finishes with a self assessment rubric to provide the students with a useful tool to prepare the exam.
